Birthday, Spawn of King Kong, & Frog Catching

It's been about a week and a half since my last post, and we sure have been busy!

Saturday the 13th was my birthday. It was great! The night before it I heard a knock on the door, and found this on my front door step:

(This is my bro Kevin and my sister-in-law, Becca)

Hahaha! I love this picture. Seriously. This describes these two so well! They surprised me, and brought a huge basket of silly dress-up stuff and spa-like items (manicure set, lotion, etc). I know that the spa-themed gifts had to be Becca's idea, because I'm fairly certain I've never gotten a "serious" gift from Kevin in my life. But seriously, it was the PERFECT thing! Not only that, but they then took us out to the drive-in movie theater, where we watched the new Wolverine movie and then Star Trek. I haven't had that much fun in one night in a long time!! I'm so glad that we have Kev and Becca around. These two are just a riot (if you can't tell).

Saturday came and it was a great day. My old work buddies and good friends, Sheeba and Amanda, took me out the the fancy cupcake place and then to the Pita Pit for lunch. It was so good to hang out with them! For dinner Ben and I ate the chicken & sausage gumbo I had put in the crockpot the day before (and it was soooo good, I tell you what!). My old roommate, Alisha, stopped by after she got off of work and brought me some birthday presents: some play-doh, a coloring book, stickers, and some tasty almond kisses. :) Can't go wrong with chocolate!! It was a fabulous birthday. Thanks to everyone out there that wished me a happy birthday via phone/facebook/email! You made it even better! (This picture is Alisha wearing the silly dress-up stuff from my Kevin&Becca birthday basket o' fun, and playing with Malcom)

Last Saturday (the 20th) Ben got his annual free tickets from Melaleuca (where he works) to the Idaho Falls zoo. A bunch of his coworkers invited us to meet them at Olive Garden for lunch. It was a great time! Not to mention that Olive Garden is one of my most favoritest places on earth! Seriously. I could go just to eat the bread sticks and salad and be happy. After lunch we all headed to the zoo. It was pretty much the same as it is every year- birds, squirrels, and a few mangy lions and tigers. The primate building was memorable however... As we had just gotten to the last exhibit it was apparently lunch time for the animals. The monkeys closest to the area where the zookeepers were preparing various fruits where making a ton of racket! I was standing there, next to the glass of some type of black, especially lanky-armed ape and absent-midedly looking behind me in the hungry monkeys direction.. when SMACK!! An ape, that had been loping around his area came full speed at the window, and hung there starring at me not more than 6 inches away. It gave me flashbacks to that movie Congo.. ? With the killer apes?! In any case, it scared the bejeezes out of me and everyone around me. I think there was a chorus of screaming children and females.. haha.. I've named the ape "Spawn of King Kong" with good reason. Cheeky monkey. I bet it does that multiple times a day, just waiting for a new victim to scare. I bet Ben would be good friends with that cheeky monkey, had Ben been born an Ape in the zoo.

After we got home from Idaho Falls, we headed out again to catch some frogs for a jungle terrarium Ben is building at his work (those of you who are familiar with his last project there that involved aquaponics, will remember the 55 gal. fish tank they used to keep tilapia in, next to the french teams...? Anyway, they ate most of the fish and now the tank has been transformed into a terrarium. Ben always has to have his experiments!). We took our savvy frog-hunter Sarah with us to the local golf course, where we searched the pond scum for life. Pictured left are the two frogs they found in their new home (it's a lot bigger than it looks).

If you're wondering what happened to the remaining tilapia, the ones that weren't large enough to grill up yet, Ben brought them home in a wastebasket from work where they lived in our bathroom for a few days. This was an interesting experience. Why, you ask? Have you ever awoken at 4:00 in the morning to the sound of a flopping and flipping, slippery fish slapping your bathroom floor tiles in a desperate attempt to find the wastebasket it just hopped free of?? After a few moments of sleepy confusion, I'd remember about the fish and have to wake up Ben to put them back in the water. The conversation usually went like this:
Me: "Ben, the fish are out again"
Ben: *Muffled Grunt*

Me: "Benny, the fish *mumble mumble* again"
Ben: *Silence*
(My mind wonders off into dreamland for a few moments, until I am again awoken by the fishes tongan-slap dance just a few yards away)
Me: "Beeeen. Fish!"
Ben: *Muffled grunt*
Me: "Ben! Wake up! I don't want dead stinking fish on our bathroom floor now get uuuup!"
(This is where I implement what I like to call "body nudging", which involves using every limb and occasionally your entire weight to"gently nudge" your spouse awake and out of bed. Always works and I am fast asleep by the time he gets back. :)

In case you were curious about where this fish ended up, you can rest soundly knowing they are living comfortably in an algae-covered, rustic bath tub in our friend Sarah's back yard. Originally, Ben planned on releasing them into the fish-less ponds in the campus gardens. This, however, would have required the cover of darkness, the honor code-induced curfew (for everyone else), and breaking a tiny law... or two.. The old bathtub may not be as nice an environment for our scaly friends, but at least we're keeping them on the straight and narrow, so to speak. (This is a picture of Ben emptying the wastebasket of fish into tub behind Sarah's house. You can't see the half-dozen or so fish, but you get the idea...)

Father' Day was great as well. Malcom and I did our best to spoil Ben rotten. We gave him a massage and made him "man food" (anything that gets cooked on a grill, this time referring to hamburgers). Ben works so hard I think every Sunday should be Father's Day. I'm so glad I married him, he;s the best friend I've ever had and I look up to him. He's only had three months of being a daddy so far, but he is magnificent at it. I think back to my single, pre-Ben self and remember hoping to marry someone as wonderful, but not thinking it was possible. I'm grateful for everything he is not only as my husband, but also for his fathering abilities. Not only will he love and discipline Malcom, but he'll also be able to show him how to kill make-believe zombie-nazi-pirate- dinosaurs. I can't wait for that!

Well I believe this post has been way too long and I have a unhappy baby I need to take care of. Love to all! And happy Dad's Day to all the father's out there!

Shots Suck

I finally got the nerve to go and have Malcom get his first shots yesterday. I'm fairly certain it was a lot harder on me than on the manchild... there's nothing quite like holding your baby and hearing the screams of horrified infants in the next room. He kept smiling and flirting with the nurses while we put him down on the table, waiting for the head nurse to ready her scewers. Then they asked me to hold his arms down! So I did, and I got to be the one Malcom looked at when they stuck him three times in the legs!!! I must have looked like a traitor to him. His face changed from mid-smile, to confusion, to horror when he finally realized he was hurting. He's a tough kid though. He didn't even cry for more than a minute afterward!

Sometimes I need to remind myself that Malcom is a Matheson, and therefore virtually indestructible. :)

Here's the little man in his crib last night as we were getting ready for a bath. See his bandaids? We survived!!

Here he is enjoying a bath last night. And yes, that is a pink wash cloth. It's okay, he's secure in his manhood... and we have a lot of pink washcloths for some odd reason.. ;)

That little ball in the middle of the bed is Malcom enjoying the family bed. Lucky kid!

Cutest manchild ever!

We went out adventuring the two Saturday's ago. Ben went mountain biking with a buddy from work and Malcom and I ent to really test out those all terrain tires on his stroller. He slept through the WHOLE experience, though I don't know how- we "off-roaded" it a bit and ended up on this path .

And, like always, here are some random snidbits of entertainment for you:

"Team Hoyt"

Ben just showed me this youtube video about the love between a father and a son, and I cried like a baby. This is a wonderful, beautiful story and I hope everyone gets a chance to watch it!!

Random Storytime: Manchild Flashback

We had our baby shower way back in December, and were blessed to get a ton a gifts from our friends and family. We had been told that we were having a girl after the 21 week ultrasound, so the baby shower was very pink-themed. I got all these adorable little dresses and girly outfits I just couldn't wait to put on the baby once it was born...

And then a few months later we found ourselves in a labor and delivery room at the hospital, 38 weeks along and being induced. The long day started at 8am, and I got the epidural at around 1pm (best decision I've ever made and worth every penny!). I still had another 7 hours of "chillaxing" and napping before we started the pushing process, so I had all this quiet time to reflect on our "little girl" and dream of all the fun we would have doing girl-things... then pushing time came- which quickly turned into horrible, horrible back labor and lasted two hours until it was finally done. About my only remaining memory of this was that Ben kept saying, "You're almost there!", too which I lovingly reminded him, through gritted teeth, that he had said that an hour ago. He was wonderful though, even if I did get a little annoyed sometimes...

When I had no idea how I could keep going the little kiddo was finally born, and the first words out of our doctors mouth were very surprised: "It's a... boy!" What?! All the nurses looked surprised and amused as well, since we had been calling the baby "Elise" this entire time (which was the name we had picked out for the baby). Honestly, at first I didn't care one way or the other, I was just sooooo relieved to be done! And then it slowly dawned on me- boy. Not little girl... it was a boy?! Really? Images of the baby announcements I had spent hours making by hand, pink designs with ribbons and bows, flashed in my mind like a dream. What about the adorable dresses, the toys, the diaper bag, tights, blankets, onsies... everything?? We didn't even have a name!

Once the baby was done being checked out, had gotten his first bath, and his daddy got to hold him, it was my turn. It was an odd moment for me to be honest. While he was beautiful and perfect, he seemed like a stranger to me because the baby I had gotten to know in my mind was a sweet little girl who would pick daisies and where dresses on Sunday. It was perplexing, but wonderful at the same time. He was 6 pounds 10 ounces of perfect, chubby baby features, so innocent and sweet. I couldn't help but fall in love with him- but I definitely had to adjust!

It was 1am before we got to our regular-family room in the hospital. Ben and I were so tired but
we couldn't sleep because we were too excited. We couldn't help but stare at the little man in pure awe.

Then we had to find a name.
Ben was very adamant about naming him Angus (after Angus Young, from AC/DC, and Ben's childhood idol). And if Angus wasn't enough he wanted the middle name of "Danger". Angus Danger Matheson. Over my dead body.

Once Angus was thoroughly shot down he went for Malcom, which I admit I laughed at because there are just so many M's in that name. We wanted something Scottish sounding, so we popped open the ol' laptop and searched websites for plausible names.

(By the way, Angus young is not wearing tights in the above picture. Just FYI)

"...Liam, Ian, Sean, Doug, Keith, Alec, Reede, Kaid... No Ben, we are not naming our son Angus...Haha, Lennox is funny... but we are not nerdy enough to name our kid after a computer operating system..." *sigh*

Duncan was actually a close contender and ended up in the top two. I blame this on the fact that we had been having marathons of old Highlander series shows for the previous few weeks- "My name is Duncan McCleod of the Clan McCleod"... Classic. The show's theme was even written and performed by the musical group Queen- now that's classic! Plus we were running on about three days on zero sleep... I still don't mind the name though I don't think it would have fit him very well.

We eventually settled on Malcom Edgar (Edgar after my dad,
which was actually Ben's idea and makes me love him even more for) it. Ben informed me later that he got Malcom from ACDC as well (I guess Malcom is actually Angus's older brother). I've got one word about that Ben: sneaky. At least we named our manchild after the Young brother with the sweet hair. Can't help feeling a little white trash and nerdy though... haha

Personally
, I blame Ben for that, but it's okay because he's proud of his "white-trash" roots. ;)

My mom and step dad, and my brother and sister-in-law came to the rescue and bought TONS of little boy clothes and blankets for the little guy, which is so wonderful. He didn't have to go home from the hospital in a pink dress after all! We also got a big box of his first hand-me-downs from another one of his aunts, which is great since he's growing so ridiculously
fast.

Honestly, I can't believe he's 10 weeks already! 10 weeks, 10 pounds and 11 ounces (he got weighed today). He's all sorts of social- cooing and smiling up a storm. I couldn't have asked for a better baby if I had dreamed him up, seriously. He's our new best friend and favorite. I still can't wait for him to meet everyone! (This picture was taken last week sometime)

So, to be honest I had a completely different idea when I first started this blog entry, but I've completely lost it. Hmmm... ?? oh well. :)

Oh, we did go out to Beaver Dick Park (yes, it is really called that) last Saturday. Ben went riding his bike with a friend from work while Malcom and I took his way awesome, hard-core jogging stroller out for an "off-roading"adventure. We ended up forging two streams and getting a little turned around in the wetlands out there, then attracted by a swarm of mosquitoes. Ohhhhh, how I hate them! Malcom only got two little bites, thank goodness... I ended up with a good 15. Fun times! And did you know he slept through all of it??! Good grief! I swear. It would be like sleeping through a rodeo ride. I even tried to wake him up so that he could enjoy nature, but he wouldn't have it. Crazy kid!

We also went to the Porter Park the other day. Pictures are soon to come. Love to all!

Blessing Day

Malcom was blessed last Sunday in church by his dad while his grandpa Lance, the bishop, and his uncle Kevin helped. Thanks to all those who showed their support and attended!

It's funny how baby blessings go- they're sweet when you hear other people's baby's being blessed, but it's so much more special when it's your own husband and baby! It was a wonderful experience to say the least. I love having the priesthood in our home, and I couldn't be more proud of my boys. Ben even wore his Matheson clan tartan tie! That's pride, I tell you what.

Afterward we had a BBQ at our apartment which was very tasty. My brother, Kevin, and Ben decided that they had to cut our watermelon with a machete (it was on sale at Walmart last year on Ben's birthday. I had to get it... I mean, what's more manly than a machete?)... Good times in the Matheson house. Yep yep.

Here are some pictures of Mr. Malcom in his white suit before we headed to church. My mom bought this little romper-suit from the Distribution Center online (thanks mom!). It ended up being waaay to big for my little man so I hemmed up the sleeves and legs, then I couldn't stop myself so I cut off the collar around the vest, then adjusted the collar around the neck to fold down. We finished it up by making a tie- it turned out really cute, if I say so myself!

The three of us

Mr. Malcom

I plan on getting Malcom back in the outfit to take more pics, he just looked so cute! Anyway, here's another cute pic from the weekend:

Check out that drool! He sure does love Grandma!

Well folks that's all for now. Love to all!

Let's Start at the Very Beginning...

Wooooaaah!
I can't believe I'm doing this. I have finally succumbed to the peer pressure and am actually writing a blog. I shake my head in shame at myself. Oh well, I guess it can't be helped. Besides, a mom can never have too many avenues and opportunities to brag about her kid. :) Okay, so since this is our first blog here I believe I should make some clear points:

1. While I may be kind and entertain the internet audiences out there occasionally, it will by no means be on a regular basis. I am lazy, forgetful, and have my hands full of bab
y most of the time. Also, I am forgetful. Anyone who pressures me to update the blog will be promptly taken out back and flogged with a herring.

2. I am not always "entertaining". If I write a blog that bores you it's you're fault for reading it. You're also a jerk for not thinking it's funny.

3. I don't get a lot of sleep and as a result, typically don't make a lot of sense. Any grammatical corrections made by a reader will also be taken out back and flogged. Then forgotten.

4. Encouraging, witty, or especially clever comments are always welcome.

5. Since I was in junior high I have had the habit of using emoticon smileys (such as ;) and :), etc.), sometimes to excess. I also enjoy exclamation marks on occasion, and these are things that I have not been able to overcome. Sorry if it annoys anyone out there...

I feel better now that we have that established. Now to finish getting this here blog fancied-up and invite everyone to the online party. Woohoo!

Stay tuned: Malcom smiles, blessing day, and two-month shots are all coming up in the next week...
